Workshop Details:

In this clay hand building workshop, you’ll create and decorate a piece - or smaller pieces - of your choice. I will provide you with a set amount of clay, any ideas and inspiration you might need, and guidance to bring your project to life.

Come with an idea in mind (searching keywords on Instagram and Pinterest will help a lot if you need inspiration) - or, follow along as I suggest a few beginner-friendly methods to make your piece. There are many ways to hand build something - pinching, using slabs, and coils - and we can explore the best one for you after a little tutorial. If you’d like to email me to brainstorm some ideas before you come, or to ask any questions, please feel free! I have lots of ideas to share. I will provide some light, non-alcoholic drinks for us to sip on - and you’ll take home your own little ceramic crabapple and sticker, on the house. :)

Near the latter end of the workshop, once our pieces have dried a bit, we will have time to decorate them with underglaze. I have lots of great colours. I’ll take care of the final, clear glaze that’ll finish off your piece(s). Or, if you’d prefer a more minimal approach, you can choose between a white, pink, or speckled glaze that I can apply to your piece for you. (This glaze requires a firing to happen first). I will fire your pieces for you, and they’ll be ready for pick up four weeks after the workshop takes place. All of the pieces we’ll make in these workshops are food, microwave, and dishwasher safe.

Workshops are limited to 12 participants. If you would like to book a private event, please get in touch! I’d love to talk to you about this further.

Some additional fineprint:

Workshop spaces are non-refundable. However, they are transferable. So if you can find a friend to take your place, we can work something out. Please just contact me ahead of time.

Due to the unpredictable nature of ceramics, I cannot be held responsible for the outcome or appearance of your piece(s). I will do my best to guide you to create something successful, and I will take great care with your piece when it comes home with me. However, ceramics are finicky - and cracks and unexpected glaze colours can still happen. If this happens, unfortunately I cannot offer a refund - but hopefully you will still love your piece, however (im)perfect.

A bit more about Carmyn and a note on pricing:

Hello! So nice to meet you. I’m Carmyn (she/her) and I live in the Strathearn neighbourhood. I have been teaching in various capacities for 8+ years, and making my own handbuilt ceramics for close to three. I love to facilitate opportunities for creativity, and I have a laid-back personality and approach to teaching. I am a new mom (my baby was born in February of 2023), and have two beautiful little cats and a wonderful partner. I am currently on an extended maternity leave, but my 9-5 is teaching art at a jr high on the north side. I love cocktails, going for rivervalley walks, and making things.

Why $100? Each piece spends a whopping 48 hours in a kiln! This adds up, in terms of equipment use, time, and electricity bills. While clay is an inexpensive medium, glaze IS expensive. Plus, I need to rent the hall, do admin work, and pay for a bunch of other little things that really add up along the way. Hope that helps bring some transparency to the price. <3
